The depths of being
A convergence of philosophy and the sea
Naming a practice is a deeply personal act. It is not merely a branding exercise; it is an attempt to capture the essence of the work, the spirit of the approach, and the promise made to those who enter the space. When I founded "The Depths of Being," the name did not arrive by accident. It emerged from the convergence of two profound influences in my life: the existential philosophy that grounds my clinical work, and the vast, mysterious ocean that has always called to my spirit.
Together, these elements form a map for the journey of self-discovery, a journey that requires courage, curiosity, and a trusted guide.
The philosophical anchor: Heidegger and Boss
To understand the "Being" in my business name, we must first look to their ideas about what it means to exist.
Heidegger introduced the concept of Dasein, often translated as "being-there." He argued that humans are not isolated subjects trapped inside our heads, looking out at an external world. Instead, we are always already in the world, inextricably linked to our environment, our relationships, and our time.
Heidegger made a crucial distinction between "a being" (an entity, a person, a thing) and "Being" itself (the very fact of existence). In our daily lives, we often get caught up in the superficial aspects of being a person, our roles, our tasks, our possessions. We forget the marvel of Being itself. We forget to ask the fundamental questions: Who am I? What does it mean to be here, now?
Medard Boss took Heidegger’s dense philosophy and applied it to the healing of the human mind. He saw that psychological suffering often stems from a restriction in how we are able to be in the world. When we are anxious or depressed, our world shrinks. We lose sight of our possibilities.
Daseinsanalysis, therefore, is not about fixing a broken machine. It is about illuminating the way a person exists. It is about clearing the fog so that one can stand in the "clearing" (Lichtung) of their own existence and see their choices more clearly. This philosophical foundation is why "Being" is central to my practice's name. It is a commitment to seeing you not as a set of symptoms, but as a unique, unfolding existence.
The metaphor of the Ocean
While philosophy provides the ground, the ocean provides the depth. My connection to the sea has always been visceral. The rhythm of the tides and the endless horizon have offered me solace and perspective throughout my life.
The ocean is the perfect analogy for the human psyche. On the surface, the water might be choppy and chaotic, whipped up by the winds of daily stress and immediate circumstances. Or, it might be deceptively calm, hiding strong currents underneath.
Most of us live on the surface. We manage the waves as best we can. However, true understanding, and true healing, often requires us to look below. The "Depths" in my name refer to those parts of ourselves that are not immediately visible. These are the submerged memories, the silent dreams, the repressed emotions, and the core truths that shape our currents from below.
The need for a guide
The ocean is beautiful, but it can also be intimidating. One does not dive into the Marianna Trench without preparation. To explore the deep ocean, you need specific equipment to breathe and to see. You need oxygen tanks, lights, and protective suits.
Ideally, you also need a guide, someone who knows the waters, who understands the currents, and who can help you navigate the pressure changes.
This is precisely what my services here offer. It provides a safe container that allows you to descend into the depths of your own being without being crushed by the weight of what you find. As your shaminic guide, I am swimming alongside you, holding the light so you can see what has been hidden in the darkness.
Synthesising the vision
"The Depths of Being" is the synthesis of these two worlds. It bridges the intellectual rigour of Daseinsanalysis with the intuitive, fluid nature of the oceanic soul.
Charting your course
Ultimately, the name reflects my belief that we are not shallow creatures. We are profound, complex, and deep. To live authenticall, to truly inhabit our Being, we must be willing to know our own depths. And this shamanic journeying of Crystal dreaming offeres that.
Whether you are feeling adrift on the surface or pulled under by currents you cannot understand, there is a way to navigate these waters. It requires the right equipment, a willing spirit, and a safe space to begin. That is what I offer here.
Welcome to The Depths of Being. The ocean is vast, but you do not have to swim it alone.
